Hancock Women Sink Santa Barbara 63-53 Behind Lee-Hammer and Rosa

Grace Rosa scored a team-best 21 points, and Taylor Lee-Hammer Hammer added 18 to lead the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team to a 63-53 home win over Santa Barbara City College on Saturday. Hancock swept the conference series with the Vaqueros, 2-0, for the first time in at least 11 years to improve to 5-3 in Western State Conference play and 13-11 overall. The Vaqueros saw their three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 4-4 in league and 12-12 on the year.

SBCC scored the first point of the game on a free throw one minute into the game to take its only lead of the game. On Hancock's next possession, Anamarie Fruge hit a layup and made a free throw to convert a three-point play to open a 7-0 run for the Bulldogs who led the rest of the way. Hancock led 22-14 after the first quarter behind a 10-for-15 effort from the floor. SBCC outscored Hancock 22-18 in the second quarter to cut into the deficit. The Bulldogs still carried a 40-36 lead into intermission.

Lee-Hammer came to life with 10 points in the third quarter to help Hancock extend its lead to as many as 17 points. Hancock carried a 55-44 lead into the fourth quarter. SBCC came to within six points in the fourth, but the Bulldogs held on for the victory.

Rosa led the Bulldogs with 21 points and nine rebounds. The sophomore went 9-for-18 from the field and 3-for-3 at the line. She pulled down seven offensive rebounds and blocked two shots.

Lee-Hammer went 5-for-12 from the field and made all eight of her free throws to finish with 19 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals. She had five offensive boards.

Freshman Brianna Rubalcaba scored 10 points to give Hancock three scorers in double-digits. She went 5-for-10 from the floor, and racked up three steals, two assists and two boards.

Anamarie Fruge enjoyed a solid game with nine points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks. She picked up production for the Bulldogs, who were playing without Karly Beyers. The sophomore missed the game with an ankle injury.

The Bulldogs shot 43 percent from the field by sinking 25-of-58 overall. SBCC went 21-for-62 to shoot 33 percent. The Bulldogs went 1-for-6 from 3-point range, while the Vaqueros went 7-for-25 from beyond-the-arc or 28 percent. The Bulldogs were a perfect 12-for-12 from the line and outrebounded SBCC 38 to 33.

Hancock returns to action at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, February 14 at Cuesta College. The Bulldogs defeated the Cougars 53-37 last month.
