Hancock Women's Basketball's Memorable Season Ends After Bulldogs Left Out of Regionals

Despite a 15-11 record and the program's best conference record in 17 seasons, the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team was not one of the 19 teams selected for the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Regional Playoffs on Monday.

The Bulldogs ended the season on a three-game winning streak and finished third in the Western State Conference's North Division with a 7-3 record. Conference champion Ventura and second-place Moorpark received the Southern Regional's No.5 and No. 9 seeds respectively. Ventura will host No. 12 Cypress and Moorpark travels to No. 8 LA Valley for second-round games on Friday.

With this season's 15-11 overall record, the Bulldogs recorded their third straight winning season under Head Coach Cary Nerelli. The last time Hancock strung together three consecutive winning seasons was between the 1992-93 and 1994-95 seasons.

The Bulldogs were hoping to earn a bid for the second straight year. Last season, Hancock received the No. 18 seed to earn the program's first postseason bid in nearly 20 years. The Bulldogs fell 75-63 at No. 15 Santa Ana in the first round.

Monday's playoff announcement marked the end of the Hancock basketball careers of six sophomores: Grace Rosa, Taylor Lee-Hammer, Karly Beyers, Hannah Walls, Vanessa Ortiz and Anamarie Fruge.

Rosa finished the season averaging a team-high 14.4 points and 8.3 rebounds per game, ranking fourth and fifth in the conference. She recorded six double-doubles this season and 10 during her Bulldog career. Lee-Hammer averaged 13.8 points and 3.5 assists per game for the Bulldogs, ranking fifth and fourth all conference players. Beyers ranked third in conference with 3.8 assists per game, sixth with 7.9 rebounds per game and ninth with 12.5 points per contest. Beyers, a Pioneer Valley High School graduate, compiled six double-doubles this season.
