Women's Basketball Opens Winter Classic with Win Over Orange Coast

Day 1

The Allan Hancock College Women's Basketball team opened the 21st annual Toys for Tots Tournament with a 82-38 win over the visiting Orange Coast Pirates. Jayci Bayne once again led the Bulldogs with 26 points and three players earned seven rebounds. The Bulldogs are on a two game winning streak and improve to 5-4 on the season with fresh players coming back off injury. Orange Coast falls to 1-3. 

Bayne, who sits at eleventh in the state in points per game, scored 26 points on 11-for-16 shooting and going 3-for-5 from the charity stripe. She also earned seven rebounds, two assists, and three steals. 

Hancock got off to a quick start going up 30-7 in the first 10 minutes of play. They entered halftime with a 53-13 lead over their opponents. Coming out of halftime, as the lead increased, the Bulldogs slowed down their possessions to manage the clock and close out the game 82-38. 

The Bulldogs moved the ball around well earning 24 assists and shot a season best 50% from the field. The Bulldogs scored a season high 54 points in the paint. 

Hancock scored 47 points by capitalizing off Orange Coast's 28 turnovers. Orange Coast only earned seven points off Hancock's seven turnovers.

The Bulldogs pulled in just three more rebounds over the pirates 38-35. Each team played aggressively for rebounds. 

Alijah Paquet ended the game with 20 points, two steals, and a team high eight assists. Aryana Gonzales earned 13 points, six assists, and a team leading five steals. Every Bulldog scored at least two points in the game.

Bayne, Paquet, and Sarah Gudeman all earned seven rebounds. Bayne led with six defensive rebounds and Gudeman led with six offensive rebounds. 

The Bulldogs will continue the Toys for Tots Tournament tomorrow, Friday, December 6th at 7 PM when they face off against the 6-3 LA Harbor Seahawks. The Seahawks come off a day one loss to Santa Barbara City College 53-44. Be sure to come support the Lady Bulldogs tomorrow as they play the Seahawks.
