Bio

Carney owns more than 30 years of basketball coaching experience. The 2017-18 season will be his seventh serving as an assistant at Hancock.

Carney started his coaching career at Lakeview Junior High and Righetti High School before he became the head varsity coach at Santa Maria High School, a position he held for 24 years. Several of his players from the 1999-2000 team went on to play at four-year universities like UCLA and Fresno Pacific. Carney was the head coach at SMHS for Leslie Miller, who is now a fellow assistant coach at Hancock. Carney says his favorite parts of coaching are teaching the game of basketball and helping his players improve and develop every day.

The college renamed its annual Coaches vs. Cancer event the Carney's Coaches vs. Cancer event in honor of the beloved coach. The event raises money for the Mission Hope Cancer Center in Santa Maria. The center provides support and program services to patients and families who utilize the center's medical services. Carney is a four-time cancer survivor who lost his father, mother and brother to the disease.

Carney spent 40 years as the service manager at Home Motors Chevrolet in Santa Maria. He and his wife, Bonnie, have lived in the city of Santa Maria since 1956. He has two children, Brandi, a graduate of Allan Hancock College and former Bulldog basketball player who coaches at Pioneer Valley High School; and Brad, who is a professional rodeo competitor in extreme bronc riding.
