Fraire Breaks Record and Finishes Second at State Championships in 200 IM, Roux Finishes Eighth to Earn All-American Status

Freshman Izzie Fraire and sophomore Kailey Roux made quite a splash during the opening day of the 2019 California Community College Athletic Association's Swim and Dive State Championships on Thursday at De Anza College. Fraire broke her own school record and finished second in the women's 200-yard individual medley final, while Roux finished eighth in the 1-meter diving final. Both Bulldogs earned All-American status and medals, as well as made school history.

Fraire, who swam the fifth-fastest time in the morning's preliminary heat, finished in 2:09.79, besting her school record time by 0.20 of a second. During the final, the freshman touched the wall 0.07 of a second after state champion Caitlin Hecker of Los Angeles Valley to secure second place. The runner-up finish was the best showing by a Hancock swimmer in program history, topping the fourth-place finishes of Alexandria Kwong in 2016 and 2017, and Leanna Bramble in 2015.

Roux (pictured below in front row, bottom right) finished eighth out of 18 women in the 1-meter diving final on Thursday afternoon with a score of 153.10. The top-eight finish secured the sophomore All-American status and 11 points for Hancock in the team standings. It marked the best finish by a Hancock diver in program history. The Orcutt Academy graduate came in ninth last year as a freshman, missing All-American status by one slot.

After day one of the state meet, Fraire and Roux combined to score 28 points. Hancock sits in 16th place out of more than 40 women's swim teams. Orange Coast leads the field with 174 points, 58 ahead of Diablo Valley College.

Fraire has two events remaining at state. She will compete in the 100-yard breaststroke event on Friday with a qualifying time of 1:06.11. The field includes last year's runner-up at state, Meghan Kluck (1:04) of Orange Coast, Pasadena City's Carmen Ung (1:04.33), and Danielle Brown of Sierra, who finished fourth in at state 2018.

The freshman will swim the 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday. Kluck is the top seed at 2:23.18, followed by Fraire at 2:23.55, Brown, who finished seventh a year ago, at 2:24.52, and Ung at 2:24.72.

Each day, preliminary swim heats start at 9 AM, while the finals begin at 4 PM.

Roux will dive in the 3-meter final on Friday afternoon, an event she finished tenth in last year with a score of 139.35. Last year, Roux was Hancock's only state qualifier. Her two top-10 finishes earned a total of 16 points as Hancock finished 27th out of 40 teams.
