DeComarmond Leads Bulldog Contingent into WSC Finals

Steven DeComarmond qualified for three events, while two other runners earned spots in next week's Western State Conference Track and Field Finals during the Prelims held on Friday at the College of the Canyons.

Jonathon General ran the third fastest time out of 36 athletes in the 100-meter dash at 11.17 seconds to qualify for the WSC Finals that will take place on Friday, April 25, at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster.

DeComarmond advanced to the finals in two events. The Santa Maria High School graduate qualified in the 200-meter dash after he ran a season-best time of 22.26 seconds, which ranked second fastest out of 53 athletes. He also qualified in the 400-meter dash with his fastest time of the season at 49.26 seconds.  DeComarmond also advanced in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.35 seconds, which was the second-best out of 16. Freshman Elijah Holt, an Arroyo Grande High School graduate, earned the ninth and final spot in the finals with a time of 16.04 seconds.

The meet served as the finals for the field events. The top six finishers in each field event  earned spots in the Southern California Preliminaries, which are Friday, May 2, at Riverside College. Pioneer Valley High School graduate Bruce Detter finished third (125 feet, 9 inches) and Nipomo High School graduate Gregory Uzueta came in fifth (113-9) in the discus throw to qualify for the SoCal Prelims. They earned eight total points for Hancock in the team standings.

Leroy Johnson also advanced to the SoCal Prelims with a fourth place finish in the men's long jump with a mark of 22 feet, one inch. Johnson added another four points to Hancock's team score.

After four field events, the Hancock men sit in fifth place overall with 12 points. Glendale leads with 43 points, followed by Canyons (35.5), West Los Angeles (27) and Santa Barbara (22).  Cuesta (11), Bakersfield (4) and Ventura (0.5) round out of the top eight.  Santa Monica and Antelope Valley will also continue the road to a conference championship next week in Lancaster.

Detter and Uzueta will also compete in the shot put and hammer throw events next week. The Bulldog men will also run in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, as well as in the 5,000 meter run.

Five Hancock women competed in the WSC Prelims. However, no female Bulldogs qualified for the finals in track events. Dalia Ordaz, Victoria Steller and Alexis Kazianka ran season-best times in their respective events.
