Swain, Bantz Fail to Advance at SoCal Prelims

(Riverside, CA) Steven De Comarmond finished seventh in the men's 110-meter high hurdles to qualify for next week's SoCal Finals. The sophomore was the only one of the six Allan Hancock College track and field athletes to qualify during the SoCal Prelims at Riverside College on Saturday.

De Comarmond, who won a Western State Conference title in the event last week, was clocked in 15.29 seconds to qualify. The top eight finishers in track events automatically qualified for the SoCal Finals. Cerritos' Mackenzi Rickman ran the fastest time of 14.62 seconds. 

The Santa Maria High School graduate also competed in the 200 meter dash where he finished 17th out of 25 with a time of 22.39 seconds. He missed advancing by .60 of a second. He also finished 13th in the 400 meter event with a time of 50.17 seconds, missing a spot in the final by .93 of a second.

Jonathon General ran the 100 meter dash in 10.95 seconds, which ranked 16th out of 28. The WSC champion missed a spot in the final by .14 of a second.

Four Bulldogs competed in field events, where the top 12 advanced to the finals. Sophomore Bruce Detter finished 21st out of 28 in the men's hammer throw. His top mark of 121 feet, two inches was 23 feet short of the mark needed to advance. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate also finished 22nd in the discus throw with a mark of 115-4. Freshman Gregory Uzueta, a Nipomo High School graduate, finished 23rd at 110-10. The distance needed to finish in the top 12 was 138-1.

On the women's side, freshman Cassandra Bantz finished 16th out of 24 in the pole vault. She cleared 9-1. The mark needed for a top 12 finish was 10-0.75. 

Sophomore Sylvana Swain's top mark in the triple jump was 32-0.75. She finished 20th out of 27 athletes and missed a spot in the top 12 by 2 feet and 1.5 inches.

The SoCal Finals are next Friday and Saturday at Riverside College.
