Three Bulldogs Compete Saturday at Track and Field State Championships

Allan Hancock College track and field athletes Rachel Naugle, Taylor Nevitt and Brent Dionisio will head to the state capitol this week to compete for state championships. The sophomore will represent the Bulldogs during the CCCAA Track and Field State Championships. American River College in Sacramento will host the state meet Friday and Saturday, May 19-20.

Naugle ran a personal-best time of 11:29.88 for a fifth-place finish in the Southern California Regional final last weekend. The sophomore's time ranks sixth in the field of 12 women who qualified for the state meet. The race will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Dionisio finished fifth in the men's high jump at the SoCal Regional finals last weekend with a top clearance of 6 feet, 4.75 inches. The Western State Conference champion's top clearance of the season, 6 feet, 10.25 inches ranks fourth in the state this year. Tyler Arroyo of San Diego Mesa has the year's top mark of 7-1. Bakersfield's Jacob Bookout and San Francisco's Rodney Morgan have both cleared 6-10.75.

"I'm a little nervous, but excited because I've never competed at a state meet before," said Dionisio. "I was disappointed with last week's results. This week, I've stayed focused, executed well in practice and I am looking forward to finishing my Hancock career with a new PR and state title."

Nevitt finished fifth at regionals last week with a top throw of 37 feet, 10.5 inches to qualify in the women's shot put. The sophomore's top mark this year of 39-0.25 ranks 11th out of the 12 state qualifiers. Cerritos' Amber Hart, who won the SoCal Regional, has the top throw in the state this year of 44-5.5. Last year, Nevitt finished eighth in the shot put at the state meet with a top toss of 40-8.

Dionisio and Nevitt will compete after 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The last Hancock male athlete to win a state title was James Pollock, who won the javelin in 1992. Bobbie Patton, who won the shot put crown in 2005, is the college's last female state champion.
