Inay Finishes Second and Fifth at WSC Finals, Advances With Batty and Uribe to SoCal Prelims

Allan Hancock College freshman Cherry Inay sprinted to two top-five finishes during the 2018 Western State Conference Track and Field Finals on Friday at Ventura College. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate qualified for next week's Southern California Regional Prelims in the 100- and 400-meter hurdles.

Inay finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.35 in the final. She finished .51 of a second behind Cuesta's Madison Mitchell. Inay also finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles final with a time of 17.26 seconds, about 2.5 seconds behind the winner from Moorpark. The top-six finishers automatically qualified for regionals. Freshman Amaris Baxter finished ninth in the final with a time of 20.60 seconds.

Hancock freshman Eduardo Uribe finished 13th in the 5,000 meter final with a time of 16:36.82. The men's 4x400 relay team ran the 11th fastest time of 4:00.93. Freshman thrower Ismael Samaguey finished 20th in the men's hammer throw event and 11th in the javelin throw event.

The Bulldogs will send three student-athletes to the Southern California Regional Prelims at San Diego Mesa College on Saturday, May 5. Freshman Haleigh Batty will compete in the women's long jump after she won the Western State Conference title and broke her college record with a jump of 19 feet, 10.25 inches. Inay qualified in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles. Uribe will compete in a new event, men's speed walking. They will try to qualify for the SoCal Regional Finals set for the following Saturday at San Diego Mesa.
