The Week Ahead: Women Open Conference Play; Football Enters Regional Rankings

The Bulldogs will look to continue the momentum from an overall successful week. The women's volleyball team closed out a San Diego Tournament with a win and opens Western State Conference action this week. The women's soccer team is riding a two-game winning streak and starts WSC action against two Central Coast rivals. The football team is ranked for the first time this season as coach Kris Dutra's squad enters its bye week. The men's soccer team will look to score its first victory of the season this week.

 

FOOTBALL (1-0, 2-2)

This Week: BYE

The Bulldogs enjoy the week off after winning their second game in a row last weekend 20-17 over Bakersfield. It marked the second time in their last 12 meetings the Bulldogs beat the Renegades. Hancock trailed 10-0 after the first quarter, but outscored the Renegades 20-0 in the next 30 minutes to take control. Hancock climbed into the Regional Poll for the first time this season as a result. The Bulldogs are 13th in the Southern California-National Division Poll and 17th in the Southern California Poll.

Freshman fullback Wesley Williams (St. Joseph HS) scored his first collegiate touchdown in the second quarter, a three-yard run, to make it a 10-7 deficit. Freshman kicker Jose Morales (Lompoc HS) kicked field goals of 50 and 48-yards, the second gave Hancock its first lead of the game 13-10 in the third quarter. Quarterback Curry Parham (St. Joseph HS) finished the third quarter with a 25-yard touchdown strike to Tristen Jeffries to make it a 20-10 to start the fourth quarter. Parham threw for 161 yards and led the team with 65 rushing yards. Jeffries caught 11 passes for 93 yards.

Defensively, Willie Iribarren (Lompoc HS) led the Bulldogs for the fourth straight game in tackles. He had 10 stops, including two for lost yardage.  The sophomore linebacker leads the state with 52 total tackles and 13 tackles per game. Logan Sprouse (Atascadero HS) broke up six passes and made five tackles at defensive back for the Bulldogs. The sophomore leads the state with nine pass breakups and ranks sixth with three interceptions.

Morales leads the state with eight field goals and ranks third with 33 points.

Next Saturday, October 11, Hancock returns to action at home against Long Beach City College, one of four remaining undefeated teams in Southern California. Long Beach is 4-0 and plays at top ranked Mt. San Antonio College this weekend. Hancock is hosting Military Appreciation Night at next week's game. Active members of the military and veterans, as well as their family, can pick up free tickets at the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce (614 South Broadway) or at the Vandenberg Air Force Base.

MEN'S SOCCER (0-4, 0-7-1)

This Week: Tues. 9/30 @ College of the Canyons, 4 p.m. *

            Fri. 10/3 vs. Moorpark, 4 p.m. *

The men's soccer team continues Western State Conference play in search of its first win under first-year head coach Billy Vinnedge. Hancock plays at Canyons on Tuesday. Canyons starts the week 2-0-2 in WSC play and 4-1-2 overall. Canyons' leading scorer is Jesus Pescador who has four goals.
 

Friday, the Bulldogs will return home to host Moorpark, which starts the week winless at 0-3 in conference and 0-4-2 for the year.

 

Last week, Hancock dropped a 1-0 decision at Glendale and a 5-1 home game to Santa Monica. Adrian Diaz (Cabrillo High School) scored Hancock's goal, his third of the season, while Jesus Valdez (Nipomo HS) was credited with the assist. Nipomo High School graduate Joel Diaz made 20 saves combined in the two games at goal keeper for Hancock.

WOMEN'S SOCCER (2-5)

            Fri. 10/3 @ Cuesta, 4 p.m. *

The women's soccer team opens Western State Conference play riding a two-game winning streak. The Bulldogs blanked Cerro Coso on the road last week 2-0 behind goals from Kaitlyn Campbell (Orcutt Academy) and Jennifer Justice (Lompoc High School).  Campbell leads the Bulldogs with six goals this season, while Justice and Berenice Miguel (Santa Maria HS) have two scores apiece.

Hancock opens conference play Tuesday at home against Santa Barbara City College. The Vaqueros are 3-3-1 overall and led by Kaitlyn Crooker, who has four goals. Friday, the Bulldogs travel to Cuesta. The Cougars are 5-3-1 overall and tied their conference opener last week. Liv Montion and Annie Mae Bohnsack have led the Cougar offense with five goals apiece.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL (5-6)

                        Fri. 10/3 @ Moorpark, 7 p.m. *

 

The women's volleyball team snapped a five-match losing streak over the weekend with a 3-1 win over Cerro Coso at the San Diego City College Tournament. The Bulldogs are 3-0 against Cerro Coso this season.

Hancock went 1-2 overall last week, dropping a match 3-0 at College of the Desert, before falling to Pima out of Arizona to open the San Diego Tournament.

The Bulldogs play at College of the Canyons (7-3) on Wednesday before opening conference action at Moorpark (2-7) on Friday.
