Hancock Falls 9-6 at Cuesta Despite Three Goals from Coyne

Meagan Coyne scored three goals, but the Allan Hancock College women's water polo team dropped a Western State Conference game 9-6 at Cuesta College on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell to 0-3 in conference and 5-10 overall. Cuesta improved to 1-2 in league and 12-7 on the season.

Shannon Copeland fired one by Cuesta goalie Mia Viss early in the fourth quarter to tie the game 6-6. The Cougars scored the final three goals of the game, including two by Katie White to earn the victory.

Coyne scored three times on seven shots. She also had two steals. Copeland, as well as sophomores Nikki Gurgiolo and Rebecca Gonzalez had one goal apiece. Gonzalez led the Bulldogs with two assists.

The game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter. Gonzalez found the back of the cage to give Hancock a 3-2 lead early in the second quarter. Cuesta led 5-3 at halftime. Behind two goals from Coyne in the third quarter, the Bulldogs narrowed the deficit to one at 6-5 after three quarters.

Hancock goalie Kinsley Edman had six saves.

The Bulldogs will play four games over two days at the Ventura College Tournament. Hancock is scheduled to play Miramar at 12:55 p.m. and Cypress at 4:10 p.m. on Friday, October 7, at the Ventura Aquatic Center. The Bulldogs are scheduled to play American River the following day at 9 a.m. at the Aquatic Center, and Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. at Rio Mesa High School.
