Gurgiolo and Edman Lead Hancock Water Polo to Win over LA Valley in Conference Tournament
Sophomore Nikki Gurgiolo scored a season-high four goals, and goalie Kinsley Edman recorded a season-best eight saves to lead the Allan Hancock College women's water polo team to an 11-8 upset win over L.A. Valley to open the Western State Conference Tournament at Cuesta College on Thursday. Hancock, the No. 6 seed, avenged an earlier 10-9 loss to the third-seeded Monarchs.
Gurgiolo, a Righetti High School graduate, paced the Hancock scoring attack. Freshman Meagan Coyne scored three times for the Bulldogs.
Hancock improved to 13-14 overall. The Bulldogs advanced into the semifinals of the double-elimination tournament. Hancock will face either No. 2 Ventura or No. 7 L.A. Pierce at 4:45 p.m.
The winner of the semifinals will play in the championship game on Saturday, November 5, at 1:30 p.m. at Cuesta. The losers in the semis will face off in the third place game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
