Brianna Magana Qualifies for State Championship, Hancock Finishes 25th at SoCal Regionals

Freshman Brianna Magana became the first Allan Hancock College runner to qualify for the CCCAA Women's Cross Country State Championship in eight years. Competing at the Southern California Regional Championships at Central Park in Santa Clarita on Friday, Magana completed the 5K course in 21:25 to finish 73rd overall out of 187 runners.

Magana led a contingent of five Hancock runners at regionals. The Bulldogs were making their first appearance at regionals as a team since 2008. After Magana, the next Bulldog to cross the finish line was Alina Delabra in 24:21, followed by Maria Uvalle in 24:49, Yadira Castellanos in 26:53 and Mireya Lopez Martinez in 28:21.

The Bulldogs finished 25th overall in the team standings. The top-14 teams qualified for the state meet, including regional champion Mt. San Antonio College. Ventura, LA Harbor, Glendale and Cuyamaca rounded out the top five.

The 20-fastest runners at regionals, whose teams did not advance to state, qualified as individuals for the state championship. Magana was No. 15 on that list of 20 individual qualifiers.

The 2018 State Championship will be November 18 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Monica Maldonado was the last Bulldog to run at the state meet. She finished 76th at the state meet in 2009.
