Baseball Team Transfers Entire Sophomore Class to Universities
The Allan Hancock College baseball program had another great run in 2011 with the team’s third playoff appearance in three years. Now that the season is over, the full extent of the team’s success is being measured by the number of Hancock alumni who have signed on to play for four-year universities.
“Every single one of our 2011 sophomore athletes has moved on to a four-year university and we couldn’t be more proud of them,” said Hancock head coach Chris Stevens.
Nine Hancock baseball alumni will be hitting the field for new teams this spring, including: Dalton Rouleau, Hofstra University; Austin Nyman, Hofstra University; J.P. Maestas, California State University Bakersfield; Jake Fields, St. Ambrose University; Jimmy Nelson, Texas College; Ryan Skillern, University of Texas at Arlington; Jordan Sechler, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff; Taylor Gilliam, Kansas Wesleyan University; and Dylan Young, California State University Northridge. Chris Rivera will attend Brandman University.
In the last ten years more than 80 Hancock baseball players have transferred to and played baseball at four-year universities. Last season, 11 players moved on to such diverse universities as Fresno State University, Pacific University and California State University Bakersfield, just to name a few.
“It is impressive and atypical to transfer that many athletes off of a California community college team,” said Kim Ensing, athletic director. “The astonishing thing to remember is that Coach Stevens has transferred the vast majority of his sophomore classes for the last several years. Win or lose this is a testament to the excellent job that he does.”
