Hancock Baseball Tops Oxnard 3-1 for Third Straight Win, Armstrong Throws Complete Game

(Santa Maria, CA) Freshman Walker Armstrong delivered the first complete-game victory by a Bulldog pitcher in nearly two years as the Allan Hancock College baseball team defeated Oxnard College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won their third straight game to improve to 4-3 in Western State Conference play and 8-7 overall. The Condors dropped to 2-3 in conference and 5-9 on the season.

Armstrong allowed one run in the third inning and blanked the Condors the rest of the way to improve to 2-2 on the season. The St. Joseph High School graduate scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out four. After allowing two singles in the top of the ninth inning, Armstrong fielded a comebacker and threw to first to end the threat and the game.  The last Hancock pitcher to go the distance was Ryan Bower in March 2014.

The Condors scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Hancock rallied in the fourth when Colby Barrick led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Colton Studebaker. Jacob Tonascia followed with a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Barrick to tag up and score the tying run. After Kyle von Tillow doubled to move Studebaker over to third, Tim Mahoney followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the eighth when the Condors committed an error on a single by Tonascia that allowed Studebaker to score from first on the play.

Studebaker led the Bulldogs with two of their seven hits. Mahoney, second baseman Jeremy Terrones, shortstop Zach Lampreia, Tonascia and von Tillow had one hit apiece.

The Bulldogs will play at Oxnard on Tuesday, March 8 at 2 p.m.
