Bulldogs Fall 48-20 at Ventura

The Allan Hancock College football team fell behind on the second play of the game and never recovered. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 15 in the regional poll, fell 48-20 at fourth ranked Ventura. The Pirates claimed the Southern California Football Association Northern Conference championship and a spot in the SCFA playoffs. The Pirates improved to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in league. The Bulldogs fell to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in conference action. 

Freshman quarterback Andrew Madrigal saw his first action of the season when he entered the game midway through the first quarter for Curry Parham. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate completed 12 of his 22 passes for 151 yards. He threw one touchdown and two interceptions. 

Hancock rushed for 271 yards led by freshman Lauina Futi, who rushed for 101 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown. It marked his third 100+ rushing yard game of the season. Shaq Autry ran for 73 yards on nine carries. Jaylin Amerson ran for 68 yards on nine carries. Lavelle Griffin and Breon Briggs caught four passes each for the Bulldogs.

Ventura took the lead for good on the second play from scrimmage of the game, a 72-yard touchdown pass from Marc Evans to Chris Marshall. Ventura led 7-0 just 42 seconds into the game. The Bulldogs strung together a nine play, 47-yard drive that ended with Ventura's Jalen Oats blocking Jose Morales' 40-yard field goal attempt. Oats ended Hancock's next drive when he intercepted a pass from Madrigal and returned the pick 39 yards to the Hancock 16 yard line. Jake Lanski converted a 27-yard field goal to give Ventura a 10-0 lead.

The Bulldogs put together an 89-yard drive fueled by a 16-yard gain by Autry. But Ventura's Tanner Geiger blocked Morales' 19-yard field goal try. Isaiah Jackson recovered the ball and returned it 74 yards the other way for a Ventura touchdown to make it 17-0 with 11:11 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs responded with a big play of their own as Lauina Futi sprinted 66-yards for a touchdown to put Hancock on the board 17-7. The Pirates answered back with an 11 play, 75-yard drive that ended with a one-yard rushing touchdown by Aaron Stanton to make it a 24-7 game. Hancock's Morales hit from 36-yards out with less than a minute to play in the first half to make it 24-10, but Ventura went 69 yards on just four plays to make it a 31-10 game after a seven-yard touchdown pass from Evans to Juan Soto right before halftime.

The Pirates added to their lead in the third quarter on a 56-yard rushing score by Paul Harris to make it 38-10. Hancock got on the board early in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard field goal by Morales to make it a 38-13 game. Harris responded with a 59-yard touchdown run on the Pirates' first play of their next drive to make it 45-13. After a Ventura field goal, the Bulldogs found the endzone on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Madrigal to Shakeer Williams to complete the scoring at 48-20.

Jonathon General and Isaiah Hill led the Bulldogs with 11 tackles apiece. Hill, Kevon Perry and Tavian Robinson had one sack apiece. Deonte Barnes made six tackles and recovered a fumble late in the fourth quarter and returned it 37 yards.

Ventura compiled a total of 567 total yards to Hancock's 435 yards. The Pirates rushed for 312 yards and threw for 255 more. Evans completed 13 of his 17 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Harris led the Pirates with 176 yards on the ground on just nine carries for two touchdowns. Aaron Standon rushed for 81 yards on 19 carries and one score.

The Bulldogs close the season on Saturday, Nov.15, at home against Moorpark. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
