
No. 22 Hancock Football Renews Rivalry with SBCC Saturday
The Allan Hancock College football team renews its county rivalry with Santa Barbara City College on Saturday at La Playa Stadium. Kick off is at 1 p.m.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 67-21 season-opening win over Santa Ana in the first on-campus home game in Hancock history. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 22 in the state this week in the Junior College Athletic Bureau's Coaches State Poll. It marks the first time in nearly three years the Bulldogs are ranked in the state's top 25.
Points on the Board: The Bulldogs scored 37-unanswered points in the first half to take control of the contest. The 67 points represent the third-largest offensive output in one game in program history, and the most since the Bulldogs scored 81 against Santa Monica in 2005. Starting sophomore quarterback Curry Parham (St. Joseph High School) completed seven of his 15 passes in the first half for 105 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Matt Albright (Nipomo High School) played in the second half and went 10 for 16 for 82 yards. Jericho Worrell led the Bulldogs' ground attack with 45 yards on 20 carries. Justin Banks scored twice and finished with 34 yards on 10 carries. Bakari Davis also added a touchdown on a two-yard run. Dy'Kari Hickey, a sophomore wide receiver, led the Bulldogs with five catches for 81 yards and a 29-yard touchdown that gave Hancock the lead for good in the first quarter 9-7. Freshman Chris Barganier (St. Joseph) added two catches for 24 yards.
Defensive Output: The Hancock defense forced seven turnovers, including four fumbles, to go with 10 tackles for lost yardage in the victory. Sophomore Damarion King recovered two fumbles, sophomore Rafael Arellano (Lompoc High School) and freshman defensive end Dondaycee Millbrook recovered one apiece. Sophomore Kevon Perry, King and freshman linebacker Gregory Artis-Payne, the younger brother of Carolina Panthers running back and former AHC star Cameron Artis-Payne, each recorded eight tackles. Perry registered 3.5 tackles for loss, while King, Elijah Holt (Arroyo Grande High School) and Kenneth Vigil (Lompoc High School) picked off passes for interceptions. Templeton High School graduate and freshman linebacker Easton Coy racked up six tackles.
"Special" Teams: Freshman Malik Williams and Holt returned punts for touchdowns, with Williams running one back 75 yards and Holt for 70 yards. Williams returned four punts for 111 yards, and gained 82 yards on three kickoff returns.
King for the Day: Sophomore defensive back DaMarion King returned an interception 31-yards for a touchdown, recorded a team-high eight tackles, and recovered two fumbles, including one in the end zone for a touchdown.
Rivalry Renewed: The meeting on Saturday will be the 54th all-time meeting between Hancock and Santa Barbara City College. The rivalry dates back to 1956 with Santa Barbara winning the last two meetings, 15-14 in 2013 and 33-27 in Santa Maria in 2014. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 30-22-1.
SBCC: The Vaqueros are coming off a 45-34 opening loss at San Bernardino. SBCC fell behind 21-0 and 35-7 in the second quarter before narrowing the gap in the second half. The Vaqueros committed four turnovers in the loss, including three lost fumbles. Quarterback Alexander Cuevas completed 13 of his 27 passes for 207 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He added 43 yards rushing and scored twice on the ground. He was sacked six times. Running back Chad Woolsey led SBCC with 82 rushing yards on 15 carries. Elijah King led SBCC with two catches for 98 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown. Elijah Cunningham provided a spark by returning a punt 100 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Vaquero defense registered 11 tackles for lost yardage, led by Santa Ynez High School graduate Clayton Hanly who had three tackles for loss, including two sacks. Elisha Allen was the team's leading tackler with nine total tackles.
