
Trio of Freshmen Lead Bulldogs to Victory in SBCC Tournament Opener
After a 12-day break, the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team showed little signs of rustiness in a 79-68 victory over L.A. Valley to open the Santa Barbara City College Basketball Classic on Thursday.
The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to three games and improved to 6-3 on the season under first-year head coach Tyson Aye. Hancock is ranked 20th in the state poll and 10th in the Southern California Regional poll. L.A. Valley fell to 0-7 on season.
Three Bulldogs reached double-digits in points led by freshman Teyvon Myers, who scored a team-high 25 points. The guard was 6 for 11 from the floor, including 2 for 5 from three-point range. Myers also made 11 of his 15 free throws.
Despite going 0 for 4 from the floor, freshman guard Andre Miller finished with 13 points. He was 13 for 16 from the free throw line. The Junipero Serra High School graduate added 4 assists and 6 steals to cap a solid all-around effort.
Isaiah Hicks also poured in 13 points on 4 for 5 shooting from the field.
Hancock made it to the line 50 times and made 37 of its shots from the free throw line for a 74 percent clip. The Bulldogs shot 47.6 percent from the floor on the night by sinking 20 of their 42 shots.
The Bulldogs carried a 35-30 lead into halftime and extended the lead in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Hancock advances to the winners' bracket and plays at 9 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs will battle the winner of Thursday's late game between Irvine Valley, the 11th ranked team in California, or Bakersfield, which is ranked 15th in the regional poll.
