White's Double-Double Leads Hancock to Thrilling 78-74 Double-Overtime Win at SBCC Tournament

Lavell White scored 24 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, both team-highs, for his first double-double of the season to lead the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team to a thrilling 78-74 win in double-overtime over Pasadena late Thursday night to close opening day of a tournament hosted by Santa Barbara City College.

The Bulldogs won their third straight to even their record at 4-4, while Pasadena dropped to 1-8. Hancock advanced to the winners' bracket and faces Victor Valley (7-6) at 9 p.m. on Friday.

Hancock trailed 26-20 at halftime, but outscored the Lancers 29-23 in the second half to force overtime tied at 49-49. The contest was tied 60-60 after the first five-minute overtime before Hancock outscored the Lancers 18-14 in the second extra-period.

White made seven of his 15 shots from the field, including two of his four three-point shots. The sophomore also made eight of his 11 free throws to finish with a season-high 24 points. He also pulled down four offensive rebounds to finish with a season-best 12 boards. Guard Shamel Williams added 19 points on seven for 14 shooting from the field. Lawrence Johnson, Andre Miller and Ali Mohammed finished with eight points apiece.

Hancock shot 39 percent overall (23 for 59) and made three of its 14 three-point attempts for a 21 percent mark. The Bulldogs made 29 of their 38 free throws for a 76 percent clip. The Lancers shot 50 percent overall on 29 for 58, while they hit 13 of 22 from the free throw line for a 59 percent clip. The Lancers held a 41-39 edge in rebounds.

Hancock held advantages in two major categories, second chance points and free throws The Bulldogs pulled down 17 offensive rebounds that led to 25 second-effort points, while the Lancers had 13 offensive rebounds contribute to 11 second-effort points. Hancock also shot 38 free throws and made 29 of them, compared to 22 trips and 13 points off free throws for the Lancers.

Also on Thursday, Victor Valley edged Irvine Valley 63-60, Cypress fell to LA Valley 76-68 and host Santa Barbara edged Miramar 63-61 in overtime.

Friday's schedule will include a 3 p.m consolation game between Pasadena and Irvine Valley, followed by a 5 p.m. battle between Cypress and Miramar. At 7 p.m.., the host Vaqueros battle L.A. Valley, while Hancock against Victor Valley will follow at 9 p.m.
