Barrage of Three-Pointers Lead Bulldogs to 82-66 Win over No. 20 Sacramento City to Open Modesto Tournament

(Modesto, CA) Shane Carney scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half to lead a contingent of five Bulldogs with 10 or more points in an 82-66 victory over Sacramento City College to open a five-day tournament hosted by Modesto Junior College on Tuesday evening. After upsetting the 20th ranked team in California, the Allan Hancock College men's basketball team improved to 6-5. Sacramento City dropped to 6-4.

Carney sank four three-pointers, all in the second half, to finish with 16 points. Matt Willkomm and Marcellus Garrick added 14 points apiece. Freshman guard Malik Rhodes finished with 12 points, while Jeremiah Headley added 11 points.

Willkomm, an Arroyo Grande High School graduate, sank four three-pointers, while Headley hit three from beyond-the-arc. Rhodes made eight of 10 from the free throw line, while Garrick sank five of his seven free throw attempts.

Tim Ford added six points and Joe Riley added five for the Bulldogs who snapped a two-game losing skid.

The two teams were tied at 31-31 at halftime, but the Bulldogs outscored Sacramento City 51-35 in the final 20 minutes to earn the victory. Hancock sank nine three-point buckets in the second half, including four from Carney, and two apiece from Willkomm and Headley.

The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 8 p.m. against Yuba. Hancock lost to Yuba during the inaugural Home Motors Invitational last month 79-69.  Yuba defeated Porterville 90-79 in its first game at the Modesto Tournament.

The five-day tournament runs through Saturday.
