Hancock Men's Basketball Looks to Play Spoilers Wednesday at Cuesta

The men's basketball team will look to play spoiler in its season finale at Cuesta College on Wednesday, February 17 at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs are in sixth place in the Western State Conference standings at 4-7 and 12-16 overall. Cuesta, which was part of the three-way tie for first place with Hancock last season, enters the week 7-3 in conference and 21-8 overall. The Cougars are tied for second with Ventura in the standings, half a game back of first place Moorpark (8-3). The Cougars will host Cuesta on Saturday in both teams' season finales.

The Bulldogs fell 69-60 at home to Cuesta last month. Freshman guard Shane Carney led the Bulldogs with 16 points and five assists. Malik Rhodes added 14 points, Matt Willkomm (Arroyo Grande HS) had 11, and Tim Ford finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Hancock will try to snap a three-game losing skid. Last week, Hancock fell 80-70 to Ventura and lost a heartbreaker, 95-91 in overtime at L.A. Pierce. WIllkomm led the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Carney added 17 and Rhodes finished with 15 against Ventura. Marcellus Garrick added 10 points against the Pirates to give Hancock four players in double figures. The Bulldogs fell in overtime to the Brahmas despite 22 points from Carney, 21 from Willkomm, 19 from Rhodes, and a career-high 15 from freshman Emilio Gonzalez (Santa Barbara HS.)

Overall, Rhodes remains Hancock's top scorer at 16.9 points per game, including 19.3 in conference games. Willkomm is averaging 16 points per game this season, and a team-high 20.1 points in conference contests. The sophomore guard is shooting 43.5 percent from three-point range. Carney ranks third on the team at 12.3 points per game.
