
Hancock Men's Basketball Heads to Chabot Tournament, Looks to Stay Hot
The men's basketball team will head to Hayward for a three-day tournament hosted by Chabot College from Thursday, November 10, through Saturday, November 12. The Bulldogs are riding a two-game winning streak fueled by two come-from-behind victories.
The Bulldogs opened the season with a 2-1 performance at a tournament hosted by Cuesta College. Sophomore transfer Kevawn Lord (West Side HS) led the Bulldogs with 13 points, and freshman forward Marc Fabricius (Copenhagen HS) added 12 points against College of the Sequoias, the No. 11 team in the Northern California Preseason Poll. Hancock, which is ranked No. 20 in the SoCal Preseason Poll, led 35-31 at halftime, but fell 67-65. The Bulldogs won their next two games thanks to stellar play from sophomores Marcellus Garrick (Westwood HS) and Shane Carney (Narbonne HS). Carney recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds in Hancock's 74-70 win against West Hills Coalinga. Garrick added 18 points and six rebounds to help Hancock erase a seven-point halftime deficit. Lord scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half to help the comeback. Hancock closed out the tournament by erasing an eight-point halftime deficit to top West Valley 78-64. Carney scored 16 of his career-high 25 points in the second half. The sophomore guard added five rebounds, four assists and four steals. Garrick hit four 3-point buckets and scored a career-best 22 points. Sophomore transfer Dominic Jackson (NW Career & Technical Academy) scored all 12 of his points in the second half. Lord added 13 points for the Bulldogs. Garrick was named to the All-Tournament Team by averaging 16 points and 5 rebounds during the three games.
The Bulldogs are one of eight teams set to compete in the annual Chabot Tip-Off. Host Chabot, DeAnza, Lassen, Siskiyous, Marin and Feather River are also in the field. Feather River is ranked No. 5 and Lassen No. 19 in the Northern California Preseason Poll.
