Men's Basketball Secures First Round Playoff Bye and No. 10 Seed, Will Face No. 7 Southwestern

The Allan Hancock College men's basketball team has earned their third straight play-off bid and their second first round bye in those three seasons. The team received the No. 10 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association's (CCCAA) Southern California Regionals after their 22-6 season. The team finished second in the Western State Conference North at 9-3. The Bulldogs will travel to No. 7 Southwestern College from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference who went 24-4 this season and swept conference play 16-0. Tipoff will be this Friday, February 28, at 7 p.m.

This season, the Bulldogs broke the 20-win mark for the third straight year and tied for the most wins in a season since the 2000-01 season (23). This will be the team's fourth play-off appearance under Head Coach Tyson Aye since his hiring in 2013-14.

Southwestern ranks in the top ten in several major stat categories including field goal percentage with 48.3 percent, three point field goal percentage at 38.9, rebounds per game at 43.7, and points earning 85.6 per game. Hancock ranks in the top twenty in those same categories with 47.3 percent shooting, 36.5 percent three point shooting, 40.4 rebounds per game, and 81.4 points per game.

Hancock has benefited from a deep bench that performed all season. Kyle Harding led the team in scoring this season with 13.5 points per game, three point shooting at 42.2 percent, assists with 4.1 per game, and steals with 1.6 per game. Mayowa Akinsanya led the team in field goal percentage for players who played over 10 minutes and averaged more than 10 points a game at 62.6 percent. Xavier Cooper led the team in rebounding with 7.6 per game.

Hancock and Southwestern only had one common opponent this season, Compton. Both teams defeated Compton, but Southwestern defeated them by 37 points and Hancock beat them by eight.
