Thrower Mikaila Davis Receives Scholarship to Concordia University
January 6, 2012
Mikaila Davis joined the track team at Allan Hancock College with no expectations other than having fun and hanging out with her teammates. A year later, she’s leaving Hancock with a scholarship to Concordia University and her first NAIA track meet just weeks away.
“Everything that has happened in the last year feels like it was meant to be and I’m so thankful. God has truly blessed me,” Davis said.
The 19-year-old track and field athlete first picked up a shot put during her junior year at Nipomo High School, but it was at Hancock that Davis said she truly refined her technique. In just one season she improved her best distance by more than five feet to an impressive 34 feet, 11.5 inches.
“Coach Flores had a lot of insights and techniques that helped me and coach Quintana was always checking up on me, making sure I made it to the weight room and put in the work I needed to,” Davis said.
Competing in the shot put, discus and javelin, Davis finished the 2011 season ranked number one in the Western State Conference in the shot put and among the top five in Southern California. She competed in just one season for the Bulldogs before being offered a spot at Concordia.
“Mikaila has a great work ethic,” said track and field head coach Louie Quintana. “If I told her to do something she did it and then some. She’s going to perform extremely well at the next level.”
Davis also excelled off the field, earning a 3.7 GPA and becoming a valued member of the athletic training staff. The experience, Davis said, cemented her desire to become a certified athletic trainer, a career she is going to pursue as a kinesiology major at Concordia.
“Mikaila has shown that the competition and opportunities are here at Hancock if you’re willing to put the work in,” Quintana said.
The 2011 track and field team starts practice on Monday, Jan. 16. Athletes interested in participating can call Quintana at 705-3299 or e-mail him at lquintana@hancockcollege.edu.
