Hancock Men Hold Their Own at Cal Poly Invite

Coming off its first conference meet win in at least 13 years, the Allan Hancock College men's track and field team held its own against Division I programs like Cal Poly, Fresno State, UCLA and Cal State Bakersfield during the Cal Poly Invitational on Saturday. 

Arroyo Grande High School graduate Elijah Holt beat a couple of Cal Poly athletes on his way to a fourth place finish in the men's 110-meter high hurdles. The freshman was clocked in 15.42 seconds. 

The Bulldogs finished second and third in the 400-meter run with Steven DeComarmond placing runner-up to Cal Poly's Matt Culver by .15 of a second with a time of 50.55 seconds. Calvin Jean placed third at 50.83 seconds. The two Hancock runners ran faster than six Division I athletes. Jean also ran the fourth fastest time in the 200-meter dash of 22.47 seconds. Jean ran faster than seven Division I athletes.

Jonathan General ran the 100-meter dash in 11.33 seconds for a seventh place finish. Cal Poly's Walter Finney ran the fastest time of 10.51 seconds. 

Leroy Johnson placed sixth in the long jump with a top mark of 20 feet, 11 inches. The freshman finished above an athlete from UCLA and Cal State Bakersfield. Ivy Adair of Cal Poly won the event with a leap of 23-6.5. Johnson also finished second in the triple jump with a top mark of 45-7. 

Nipomo High School graduate Gregory Uzueta finished sixth in the javelin throw with a top throw of 131 feet, 4.75 inches. Cal Poly's Alex Ziebert won the event with a mark of 180-5.25.

Sophomore Bruce Detter finished sixth in the shot put with a top distance of 37-6, which was better than the top throws from two Fresno State athletes. The Pioneer Valley High School graduate later placed 13th in the discus throw with a top mark of 130-9.25.

 The Hancock men won the Western State Conference Coastal Meet at Cuesta College on Friday to deliver head coach Louie Quintana his first conference win since he took over the program 13 years ago.
