Mondol Sets Four More PRs, Finishes 14th at SoCal Regional Championships in Decathlon
Khalil Mondol set four more personal records during the second and final day of the Southern California Regional Combined Events Championships at San Diego Mesa College on Wednesday. The sophomore climbed one spot over the final five events of the men's decathlon to finish fourteenth overall with 3,404 total points. Cade Lindsay of Mt. San Antonio College won the decathlon with 6,295 points edging runner-up Jherrell Charles of Riverside, who led after the first five events, by 127 points.
Mondol opened the second day of competition by setting a new personal record in the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 20.96 seconds. He followed that by breaking his PR in the discus throw by near six feet with a top mark of 82 feet, seven inches. The Righetti High School graduate cleared 10 feet, 3.25 inches in the pole vault and recorded a top throw of 103-7 in the javelin throw. Mondol ended the decathlon by setting a PR in the 1,500 meter run by eight seconds with a time of 5:50.34.
Mondol racked up 1,722 points in the final five events after earning 1,682 in the first five on Tuesday. His final score represented a 190-point improvement over his previous high in the decathlon set last month at the Northridge Invitational.
Overall, Mondol set seven personal-bests during the two-day SoCal Regional Championships. Tuesday, he set PRs in the 100 meter dash (12.66 seconds), long jump (17-1.5), and shot put (24-9.75).
Freshman Allison Molesky did not complete the final two events in the women's heptathlon on Wednesday. She opened the day by clearing 13 feet in the women's long jump, but did not compete in the javelin throw or 800 meter run. The Nipomo High School graduate was the first Hancock female athlete to qualify for the SoCal Regional Championships in the heptathlon.
