AHC Track & Field Competes at WSC Prelims

LANCASTER, Calif. - The Allan Hancock College track and field programs ventured to Antelope Valley on Friday afternoon to compete in the Western State Conference Prelims. All running events, except the 10k race, served as qualifier races for the conference finals with the top nine finishers set to advance. Finals for the long jump, triple jump, javelin, and discus events were also held at the meet and will count toward the overall team points at the championship event. All remaining field events will take at the final event in Bakersfield, Calif.

On the women's side, Stephanie Arredondo recorded a 3rd place finish in the javelin to score six points for the team. Sierra Skinner qualified for the finals after an 8th place finish in the 800m run.

Letarian Brandon and Cameron Carpenter each scored six points with 3rd place finishes in the long jump and high jump, respectively, while Jan Gutierrez tacked on two points with a 5th place finish in the javelin. Brandon also earned a slot in the finals in both the 200m dash and 400m dash after a pair of 4th place finishes on Friday. 

Ramses Valencia clocked a new PR of 10.95 as the runner-up in the 100m dash before qualifying for the 200m dash with a 6th place showing. Jorge Avalos also advanced to the finals with a pair of 5th place finishes in both the 100m and 200m races. Jayson Garcia qualified in the 400m with a 7th place finish and narrowly missed the qualifying time in the 200m dash by just .04 seconds. 

The Western State Conference Finals are set to take place at Memorial Stadium, on the campus of Bakersfield College, on Friday (May 28).
