Bulldogs Sweep Two Games to Open Mt. San Jacinto Tournament

Righetti High School graduates and fellow Allan Hancock College freshmen Katie Chenault and Jessica Rothanzl led the Bulldog softball team to two victories during the opening day of a tournament hosted by Mt. San Jacinto College on Saturday.

The Bulldogs opened with an 8-2 win over host Mt. San Jacinto and followed it with a 6-0 win over Victory. Hancock extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 5-3 on the season.

Kristine Ramos went 3 for 4 in the opener with two runs and two stolen bases. Sophomore Tawny Nunes went 2 for 4 with two runs and one RBI. Rothanzl hit a double and a triple. She scored once and drove in three runs. Missy Regalado also went 2 for 4 and scored twice.

Chenault scattered one hit and one walk in six innings. She struck out 10 and allowed one run. Freshman Serena Fernandez allowed one run in the seventh inning on two hits to close out the first game.

In the second game, Ramos went 2 for 4 with two more stolen bases and one run. Rothanzl went 2 for 3 with her second triple of the day. The freshman drove in five runs to finish the day with four hits, eight RBI and two triples. Megan Love, a Cabrillo High School graduate, went 3 for 3 with two runs. The freshman swiped three stolen bases and drove in one run.

Chenault, a Righetti High School graduate, threw a four-hit shutout in the second game. She struck out 11 and did not issue a walk. She finished with 21 strikeouts in 13 innings on the day.

Hancock closes the tournament on Sunday at 9 a.m., against Rio Hondo and College of the Desert at 11 a.m.

The Bulldogs play Taft on Thursday, Feb.20, in Hancock's home opener. The game will start at 2 p.m., at the Hagerman Sports Complex on Skyway Drive. Hancock's first four home games have been relocated to Hagerman due to on-going construction of the team's home field on campus.
