Chenault Homers, Throws Shutout as Hancock Upsets No.9 Riverside

Another day, another upset for the Allan Hancock College softball team. The Bulldogs traveled to Riverside College and knocked off the 9th ranked team in California 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to nine-games and improved to 10-3 for the season.

Once again, Katie Chenault delivered in more ways than one. The freshman struck out eight and threw a complete game, two-hit shutout. The Righetti High School graduate walked three batters and extended her streak to 23 consecutive shutout innings.

Chenault also delivered the only two runs of the game with her bat, a two-run home run to center field in the top of the first inning. She and Missy Regalado are tied for the team lead in home runs with two this season. Chenault's long ball was Hancock's only hit of the game and followed a two-out walk to Jessica Rothanzl.

The Bulldogs drew five walks from Riverside pitcher Bailey Powell, who finished with nine strikeouts.

Riverside fell to 7-4 on the season and 4-1 at home. The Tigers are ranked fifth in Southern California and ninth in the state. The Bulldogs, who are unranked, have knocked off five ranked teams so far this season. They've upset Citrus (9th in SoCal), Sacramento (6th in CA and 3rd in Northern California), West Valley (13th in CA, 7th in NorCal) and Desert (11th in CA, 7th in SoCal).

The second installment of regular season coaches polls are due out later this week.

The Bulldogs return home to host LA Valley College on Thursday, Feb.27, at 2 p.m. The game will be played at the Hagerman Sports Complex due to on-going construction of the team's home field.
