Bulldogs Crush LA Valley 9-0 for 10th Straight Win

The first three hitters in the lineup clubbed two extra-base hits apiece and Katie Chenault slugged a three-run, walk-off home run in the Allan Hancock College softball team's 9-0 five-inning rout of visiting LA Valley on Thursday at the Hagerman Sports Complex.

The Bulldogs, who are ranked 8th this week in the Southern California Regional Coaches Poll for the program's first ranking since 1999, improved to 11-3. They extended their winning streak to 10-games.

Chenault allowed a single to the first batter she faced in the game before she retired the next 15 straight hitters. The freshman, who has won two straight Southern California Pitcher of the Week awards, struck out eight batters. The Righetti High School graduate also extended her scoreless inning streak to 28.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning on a two-run double from Jessica Rothanzl. Gianna Abatti, who had singled to lead off the frame, and Haylee Kennedy, who reached on an error, both scored on the double.

It stayed 2-0 until Hancock added three more runs in the fourth. Tawny Nunes doubled in Kristine Ramos, who led off with a two-bagger. Rothanzl followed with a run-scoring double of her own. She later scored when Paige Cosand was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 5-0 Bulldogs.

Hancock exploded for four more in the fifth. Megan Love led off with an infield single. Nunes followed with a triple to the right-center field wall to score Love to make it 6-0. Rothanzl drew a walk to set the stage for Chenault. The freshman crushed a fastball and sent it over the left field wall for a three-run home run to end the game by virtue of the eight-run rule after five innings. It was Chenault's team-leading third home run of the season.

Ramos went 2 for 4 with a double and triple. Nunes, a Lompoc High School graduate, added a double, a triple, a walk and scored two runs. Rothanzl clubbed two doubles, drove in three runs, walked twice and scored twice. Chenault was hit by a pitch and drew a walk to go with the long ball. Abatti and Love added one hit apiece. The Bulldogs outhit LA Valley 9 to 1.

Hancock returns to action on Tuesday, March 4, against Bakersfield. The game will be played at the Hagerman Sports Complex due to on-going construction of the team's home field on campus.
