Late Rally Falls Short, No.8 Hancock Drops 5-4 Decision to Bakersfield

A seventh inning rally fell just short as the Allan Hancock College softball team fell 5-4 at home to Bakersfield at the Hagerman Sports Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Renegades improved to 4-8 and snapped the Bulldogs' 10-game winning streak. Hancock, which is ranked 8th in Southern California, dropped to 11-4 on the season. They open Western State Conference play with a three-game road trip that starts Thursday at Oxnard College.

The Bulldogs built an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kristine Ramos led off with a single and stole second base. She moved to third on a one-out single by Jessica Rothanzl. Ramos later scored on a Bakersfield error, while Rothanzl scored on a base hit from Gianna Abatti.

Katie Chenault breezed through the first three innings for Hancock with five strikeouts to extend her scoreless inning streak to 31. However, the Renegades got a run back in the fourth inning. Bakersfield captured a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a two-run home run from Amanda Bundy. The Renegades added two insurance runs in the sixth inning against Chenault assisted by an error from the freshman pitcher,

Hancock trailed 5-2 into the bottom of the seventh. Rothanzl singled with one out to start the rally. After Chenault flied out to left field, Regalado extended the inning with a single. Abatti walked to load the bases with two outs. Paige Cosand drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Rothanzl to make it a 5-3 game. Haylee Kennedy followed with another walk to plate Regalado to pull Hancock within one run. However, Megan Love grounded out to first base to end the rally.

Chenault, who leads the state in wins and strikeouts, took the loss to fall to 11-3 on the season. She struck out 10 in seven innings and allowed 10 hits and five runs.

Hancock managed 11 hits in the loss. Rothanzl, a freshman from Righetti High School, had three hits in four at-bats. Ramos, Regalado and Kennedy had two hits each. Chenault and Abatti each walked twice.
