No.8 Hancock Softball Sweeps WSC Doubleheader at Moorpark

Katie Chenault struck out 25 in 13 innings and Paige Cosand drove in five runs during the No.8 Allan Hancock College softball team's doubleheader sweep at Moorpark on Tuesday. The Bulldogs led both games from start to finish and cruised to a 7-1 victory in the opener and a 10-0 win in six innings in the nightcap. Hancock improved to 3-0 in conference and 14-4 overall. Moorpark dropped to 1-2 in WSC play and 4-10 for the season. 

Hancock returns home to host Santa Barbara on Thursday, March 14, at 1 p.m. The game will be played at the Hagerman Sports Complex.

In the opener, Hancock scored twice in the first inning. Moorpark responded with a solo home run in the bottom half. But that was all the scoring Chenault allowed the entire day. The Bulldogs scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings before plating two more in the seventh. 

Jessica Rothanzl went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Chenault went 1 for 3 with her team-leading fourth home run. Missy Regalado went 3 for 3 with a walk, and Cosand went 1 for 1 with a sacrifice, two walks and 3 RBI in the opening victory.

Chenault, who started the week leading the state in strikeouts and wins, struck out 14 hitters in the opener. She scattered three hits and one run in seven innings to earn her 13th win of the season.  The Righetti High graduate threw six shutout innings on the second game. She scattered three hits and three walks to go with 11 more punchouts.

Hancock got on the board in the third inning with three runs in the second game. The Bulldogs added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings before scoring three more in the sixth inning. Kristine Ramos and Megan Love had two hits each. Love also walked and drove in two runs. Cosand went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice, a double and collected two RBI. Chenault added two singles at the plate.

Chenault allowed one run, six hits and fanned 25 in 13 innings on the day.
