Chenault Named All-State, Rothanzl Scores All-Region Honors

The postseason honors have started to roll in for the Allan Hancock College softball team. Pitcher Katie Chenault earned a spot on the All-State Team issued by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association (3CFCA). First baseman Jessica Rothanzl was selected to the All-Southern California Region Team.

The two freshmen were instrumental in leading the Bulldogs to their first Western State Conference title since 1998 and first postseason berth since 1999. The pair helped the Righetti High softball team win a C.I.F. title last season, the program's first championship in 31 years.

Chenault leads the state with 355 strikeouts in 224 innings. She also leads the state with 26 wins and 11.09 strikeouts per game. She ranks second with nine shutouts and third with 30 complete games. CCCAA named Chenault its Female Athlete of the Month for March. Among her notable accomplishments this season were a perfect game against L.A. Pierce, a 22-strikeout game against Santa Barbara and breaking a 19-year old school record for most strikeouts in a single-season. Chenault was one of 36 women named to the 2014 All-State Team.

Rothanzl will enter the postseason tied for the team-lead with 42 runs, 54 hits and four triples. She leads the club with 14 doubles, a .462 batting average and 53 RBI. She ranks third in the state in RBI and is three shy of breaking the school's single-season record. The first baseman was one of 15 athletes on the All-Southern California Region Team.

The last time a Hancock player received a regional honor was in 2012 when Caitlin Voss was named to the Southern California Region Team. Chenault became the first Bulldog in at least a decade to receive All-State honors.

The Bulldogs open the postseason on Saturday, May 3, at Santa Ana. Hancock received the No.12 seed, while the Dons were seeded fifth. The first round will be a best of three game series with the winner advancing into the Super Regionals. The opener will start at 2 p.m.
