Chenault Whiffs 12, Abatti and Rothanzl Hit Home Runs, No. 12 Hancock Wins at Bakersfield 9-1

(Bakersfield, CA) Katie Chenault struck out 12, while Jessica Rothanzl and Gianna Abatti smacked home runs as the Allan Hancock College softball team extended its winning streak to 27-games with a 9-1 win on the road on Friday. The Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 12 in the state, improved to 29-2-1. The Renegades lost for the first time in five games and dropped to 16-15.

Hancock outhit the Renegades 10 to six. Rothanzl and shortstop Missy Regalado had three hits apiece.

Chenault allowed one unearned run in seven innings. She scattered six hits and struck out 12. The sophomore hit two batters and walked one. The Righetti High School graduate upped her state-leading strikeout total to 333 over 189 1/3 innings. She improved to 28-2 on the season.
Hancock scored once in the first when Michaela Valencia led off the game with a  double to center field. She eventually scored on a misplayed fly ball to center field hit by Missy Regalado that went for an error. The Bulldogs added four in the third as Rothanzl delivered a two-run single and Regalado followed with a RBI-double. Valencia walked and Megan Love reached on a bunt single to set the stage for Rothanzl.  Regalado scored on a ground ball by Judith Salazar to make it 5-0 Bulldogs.

Bakersfield scored once in the fourth on an error by Chenault, two singles and a hit batsman.

The Bulldogs added two more in the fifth to go up 7-1 on a RBI-single from Regalado and a sacrifice fly from Chenault.

Sophomore Gianna Abatti led off the sixth with a home run over the right field fence, while Rothanzl led off the seventh with her team and conference-leading eighth home run. The sophomore sent the ball over the left field fence.

Rothanzl had 3 RBI on the day to up her program-best career RBI total to 103 and her season total to 50, four off the all-time single-season record of 54 RBI held by current assistant coach Caitlin Voss. Regalado also finished with three RBI. Love and Valencia scored two times each, while Rothanzl crossed home plate three times.

Hancock was scheduled to play College of the Desert on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Santa Maria. However, College of the Desert pulled out of the game. Hancock returns to action on Thursday, April 16, at Cuesta College in a conference game at 2:30 p.m.
