Hancock Receives No. 2 Seed in SoCal Regionals, Hosts San Diego Mesa on May 2-3

The Allan Hancock College softball team received the second seed for the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Saturday. Hancock will host No. 15 San Diego Mesa in a best-of-three game series that opens Saturday, May 2, at 2 p.m. Game two of the series will be on Sunday, at noon, with a third game, if necessary, scheduled to start at 2 p.m.

The Bulldogs finished the regular season 33-2-1 and riding a 31-game winning streak. The Bulldogs went a perfect 15-0 in Western State Conference - Gold Division play.  San Diego Mesa went 17-15 during the season and finished second in the Pacific Coast Conference.

A total of 16 teams were selected by coaches for the SoCal Regionals. The top five seeds went to Palomar (33-3-1), Hancock, Cypress (32-8), Citrus (30-9), and El Camino (30-10). Cuesta (14-16), which finished second in the WSC Gold to Hancock, received the No. 16 seed and plays at Palomar. The Bulldogs went a combined 11-2 against the teams selected for the regional.

"We are thrilled to receive the second seed," said Hancock's sixth-year head coach Scia Maumausolo."The team knows the regular season doesn't mean anything anymore. Everyone is 0-0 to start the playoffs. We need to stay focused and continue to work hard toward our ultimate goal of winning a state championship."

The second seed marks the highest postseason seed for the Bulldogs in at least 16 seasons. . Hancock earned a spot in the playoffs last season as the No. 12 seed and lost in two games at No. 5 Santa Ana. The Bulldogs were making their first postseason appearance in 14 seasons.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $7 for Hancock students, faculty, staff, senior citizens, and children under 12. Previously purchased season passes to Hancock athletic events do not apply for CCCAA postseason events.

San Diego Mesa and Hancock shared a handful of common opponents. Hancock went 3-0 against Ventura, while San Diego Mesa went 1-1 against the Pirates. The Bulldogs defeated Long Beach, Grossmont, Glendale, Southwestern, Mt. San Jacinto and Rio Hondo, while San Diego went 11-7 against those programs.
