Salazar and Peterson Lead Hancock Softball to 10-3 Victory over LA Valley

Judith Salazar and Shannon Peterson drove in three runs apiece to help the Allan Hancock College softball team score a total of nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings during a 10-3 win over L.A. Valley on Friday afternoon in Santa Maria. The Bulldogs improved to 6-3-1 overall and L.A. Valley dropped to 2-5 overall.

Salazar started the Hancock scoring with a RBI-single in the bottom of the first inning to drive in Maggie Dasis and give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. L.A. Valley tied it in the fourth when Linda Torres clubbed a solo home run against Peterson.

It stayed tied 1-1 until the Bulldogs scored four times in the bottom of the fifth. Salazar delivered a two-run single to plate Christabel Chavez and Larrissa Ostrander to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Sophomore third baseman Ashley Ruiz followed with a RBI-single to score Dasis to make it 4-1 Hancock. Later, Trista Perryman struck out swinging, but the ball got away from the catcher allowing her to reach first base and Ruiz to score from third to give Hancock a 5-1 advantage.

L.A. Valley scored two unearned runs in the sixth to make it a 5-3 game. The Bulldogs broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning to put the game away. Ruiz drew a walk with the bases loaded to force in Dasis. Peterson followed with a bases-clearing double to the gap to score Salazar, Emily Gantt and Ruiz to up Hancock's lead to 9-3. Berryman capped the scoring with a RBI-single to drive in Peterson with the Bulldogs' tenth run.

Salazar led the Bulldogs with three hits. The sophomore center fielder and Peterson had three RBI each. Dasis scored three times. Gantt and Chavez both drew two walks. 

Peterson threw a complete game to earn her fourth win of the season. She scattered six hits and struck out four. She allowed three runs, but only one was earned. 

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Riverside City College Tigers visit Hancock. Riverside is 4-3 and coming off a 16-3 loss at home to Saddleback.
