Peterson and Ostrander Lead Hancock Softball to Two Wins at Hartnell

(Salinas, CA) Shannon Peterson allowed one run over 14 solid innings to help the Allan Hancock College softball team defeat San Joaquin Delta 2-1 and Hartnell 1-0 on Sunday in Salinas. Hancock improved to 8-4-1. San Joaquin Delta dropped to 7-3 and host Hartnell fell to 8-5.

The Bulldogs scored a walk-off 2-1 win to complete a come-from-behind victory against San Joaquin Delta with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to open the day. Hancock trailed 1-0 headed to the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Christabel Chavez singled and stole second and third base. The freshman scored on a RBI-single to left off the bat of Larrissa Ostrander. With Maggie Dasis at the plate, Ostrander took off in an attempt to steal second base. The Delta catcher's throw to second ricocheted off Ostrander's helmet and bounced by the charging center fielder. Ostrander took off and scored on the play to deliver a thrilling 2-1 victory.

Ostrander, third baseman Ashley Ruiz and Chavez had two hits apiece. Ruiz clubbed a double, while Emily Gantt added a single in the win.

Peterson went the distance to earn the win. She allowed one run in the fifth inning. She scattered five hits, walked one and struck out four.

During the second game, Hancock scored the only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Ostrander doubled to center field and promptly stole third base. Dasis followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to allow Ostrander to tag up and score from third with what proved to be the game winner.

Hancock finished with four hits in the game. Ostrander, Judith Salazar, Monique Hoobery and Chavez had one hit apiece.

Peterson earned the victory with seven shutout innings. The freshman scattered six hits, walked one and struck out one.

On the day, Peterson allowed one run and 11 hits over 14 innings. She fanned five and walked two.

Hancock returns home to host Bakersfield on Wednesday, February 25 at noon.
