Hancock Softball Splits Doubleheader at SBCC

A three-run seventh inning fueled by a throwing error on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Judith Salazar helped the Allan Hancock College softball split a doubleheader at Santa Barbara City College Tuesday afternoon. A late rally by the Bulldogs fell just short as Hancock lost the opener 8-7, before winning the second game 6-3. Hancock improved to 6-8 in Western State Conference play and 15-19-1 overall. The Vaqueros are 9-4 in conference and 25-9 on the season.

Hancock took an early lead in the second game with a three-run second inning. Micalah Herrigel and Larrissa Ostrander hit run-scoring singles, and  Christabel Chavez drew a bases-loaded walk to help Hancock build a 3-0 lead. The Vaqueros tied it with three runs in the bottom half. The game remained tied 3-3 until the top of the seventh inning. Chavez and Ostrander drew walks to lead off the inning, and Maggie Dasis reached on a bunt-single to load the bases. Salazar followed with a sacrifice fly that allowed Chavez to score the tie-breaking run. On the play, a relay throw went awry allowing Ostrander and Dasis to score to give Hancock a 6-3 lead.
Shannon Peterson threw five and two-third innings of shutout relief to earn the win. She struck out two and scattered five hits.
Dasis led the Bulldogs' seven-hit attack with two base hits in the second game.
In the opener, SBCC took control with six runs in the first and two more in the second to build an 8-0 lead. Hancock bats came to life in the fifth inning. Ashley Ruiz scored on an error to open a six-run outburst. Chavez hit a two-run single, Ostrander singled home a run, while Dasis and Salazar each drove in a run with ground balls to cut the deficit to 8-6.
The Bulldogs inched closer with a run-scoring single from Chavez to climb to within one run.
Hancock threatened in the seventh when Dasis legged out a one-out double. Salazar flew out to center and Dasis was doubled up at second on a game-ending double play.
Chavez finished with two hits and a career-high 3 RBI in the first game.

The Bulldogs will travel to LA Pierce for a game Thursday, April 14, at 2:30 p.m.
