Hancock Softball Routs L.A. Valley 10-1 in Season Opener

Freshman Bailey Killough drove in three runs, and Righetti High School graduates Maggie Dasis and Nakaila Fuggs each plated two more during the Allan Hancock College softball team's season-opening 10-1 five-inning win at L.A. Valley Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 1-0 and will play a doubleheader at San Diego on Saturday.

Hancock struck first in the top of the first when sophomore shortstop Larrissa Ostrander led off with a triple and scored on Fuggs' basehit. The freshman third baseman later stole third base and scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0 Hancock. Dasis drew a walk, stole second, and eventually scored on a ground ball off the bat of Killough, an Arroyo Grande High School graduate, to cap the three-run frame.

After Pierce scored once in the bottom of the first, Hancock added two more in the second when Fuggs walked, stole second and third, and scored on a passed ball. Killough clubbed a two-run double that scored Dasis and Emily Gantt to make it 8-1 Bulldogs. They added another in the fourth on a RBI-grounder by pitcher Shannon Peterson, and scored their tenth run in the fifth on a RBI-double by Dasis that scored Ostrander.

Peterson and Bailey Killough combined to throw a two-hitter with nine strikeouts. Peterson earned the win by going the first three innings. She allowed two hits, one unearned run, issued one walk, and struck out four. Killough, an Arroyo Grande High School graduate, struck out five and did not allow a hit in the final two innings. She hit one Monarch hitter.

Ostrander and Dasis had two extra-basehits apiece. Ostrander hit a double and a triple and scored twice. Fuggs stole three bases and scored three times. Dasis had two doubles and two stolen bases. All together, Hancock stole seven bases and drew nine walks.

The Bulldogs will play a doubleheader at San Diego on Saturday with games set for 12 and 2 p.m. Hancock will return home to host Riverside on Saturday, February 4, at 1:30 p.m. in the Bulldogs' home opener.
