Hancock Softball Splits Two Games at Mt. San Jacinto Tournament

Two three-run innings propelled the Allan Hancock College softball team to a 6-4 win over San Bernardino to open a two-day tournament at Mt. San Jacinto College on Friday. The Bulldogs lost their second game 3-2 to Imperial Valley to split a doubleheader. Hancock finished the day 5-1 overall.  IVC improved to 7-1. The Bulldogs will face Grossmont (2-1) Saturday to close out the invitational.

In the opener, Hancock broke open a scoreless game in the third inning when the San Bernardino catcher threw away a pickoff throw to first base with the bases loaded allowing Christabel Chavez and Larrissa Ostrander to score on the error.   Isabella Partida followed with a RBI-single to drive in Nakaila Fuggs to cap the three-run inning.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth when pinch runner Sierra Martinez stole second and scored on Leticia Hoobery's single to make it 4-0. After Chavez walked, Ostrander delivered a RBI-single to drive home Hoobery to make it 5-0 Bulldogs. Fuggs followed with a single allowing Chavez to score, but Ostrander was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Hancock still built a 6-0 lead.

Hancock freshman Bailey Killough earned the win. The freshmen threw five shutout innings, and returned to pitch the seventh where she allowed one run and preserved the win. She allowed four hits and struck out three. Freshman Hannah Diaz made her collegiate pitching debut. She allowed three runs and five hits.

Ostrander led the Bulldogs' seven-hit attack with two hits, including a double.

In the second game, Imperial Valley scored two runs in the first inning off Hancock starting pitcher Shannon Peterson. The Bulldogs cut the deficit in half in the second when Martinez pinch ran for Killough, who had singled, stole second and scored on a RBI-single off the bat of Peterson. Imperial Valley got the run back in the third with two doubles to take a 3-1 lead.

Hancock climbed to within one in the sixth when Fuggs singled and scored on a triple by Partida with two outs. Partida was stranded at third representing the tying run.  The Bulldogs managed just five base runners and struck out 10 times in the second game.

Peterson was tagged with the loss despite allowing just three runs and eight hits.
