First Place Hancock Softball Blanks Brahmas 8-0, Hancock Duo Combines to Throw No-Hitter

Shannon Peterson and Hannah Diaz combined to throw a no-hitter, and Myranda Morales hit two RBI-doubles during the Allan Hancock College softball team's 8-0 six-inning win over L.A. Pierce Thursday afternoon at the Hancock Softball Field. The Bulldogs won their eighth straight Western State Conference game to improve to 8-1 in league and 14-4 overall.  Hancock opened the day with a one-game lead over Moorpark and Bakersfield, who were tied for second at 7-2 in conference games. The Brahmas fell to 0-10 in league and 0-15 overall.

Peterson went the first three innings. She struck out one and only allowed two baserunners, both were hit by pitches in the first inning. The sophomore picked up the win to improve to 4-2. Diaz, a freshman, struck out four and did not allow a single opponent on base over three-hitless innings.

Hancock got on the board in the bottom of the first when Isabella Partida hit a one-out double and scored on a RBI-single from Maggie Dasis. Morales followed with a RBI-double to drive in Dasis to make it 2-0 Hancock. Peterson later delivered a two-out single to score Morales to cap a three-run inning.

The Bulldogs added another in the third when Dasis walked, stole second and scored on a Morales double to push their lead to 4-0. In the fifth, Larrissa Ostrander singled by the third baseman to score Nakaila Fuggs to make it 5-0 Bulldogs. Then in the fifth, Emily Gantt hit a grounder that scored Morales to push the Bulldogs' lead to 6-0.

Hancock ended the game early by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth to enforce the eight-run rule. Fuggs skied one over the left-fielder's head to bring home Nikole Cody, who led off with a double. The game ended when Sierra Martinez hit a groundball that was misplayed by the Pierce second baseman to allow Fuggs to score Hancock's eighth run.

Morales went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, two doubles, two runs and drew one walk. Fuggs went 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs.  Dasis, Ostrander and Peterson each drove in one run. The Bulldogs did not strikeout once against Pierce pitcher Madison Tupper.

The Bulldogs will host Southwestern and undefeated Mt. San Antonio College this Saturday to end a five-game homestand. Hancock will face Southwestern at 11 a.m. and battle Mt. SAC at 3 p.m. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Crystl Bustos is an assistant coach for Mt. SAC.
