Hancock Softball Sweeps WSC Doubleheader from Santa Monica 13-0 and 21-0

The Allan Hancock College softball team swept a Western State Conference doubleheader from Santa Monica 13-0 and 21-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the Hancock Softball Field. Both games ended after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Bulldogs outscored the Corsairs by a combined score of 34-0 and held a 30-1 edge in hits. Hancock remained in first place in the standings at 12-2 in conference and 20-10 overall. Santa Monica fell to 1-14 in league and overall.

Freshmen Bailey Killough and Hannah Diaz combined to throw a perfect game in the opener. Killough went the first three innings with six strikeouts. Diaz threw the final two and struck out three.

Hancock went right to work in the first inning as Myranda Morales hit a two-run single to open the scoring. Shannon Peterson later delivered a RBI-single to make it 3-0 Bulldogs. Leticia Hoobery capped a four-run inning with a triple to drive in Peterson.

The Bulldogs added three more in the second thanks to a RBI-double by Partida, sacrifice fly from Peterson, and a RBI-single off the bat of Emily Gantt. The Bulldogs put it out of reach with a six-run third as Desiree Lopez, Peterson, Hoobery and Sierra Martinez each collected RBI-hits.

Hancock managed 13 hits in the opener including two apiece from Morales, Peterson and Hoobery. Peterson finished with 3 RBI, while Lopez, Morales and Hoobery each drove in a pair of runs.

In game two, the Bulldogs put up five runs in both the first and second innings. Maggie Dasis delivered a RBI-double, while Lopez and Hoobery had two-run singles in the first inning. Peterson stroked a two-run double, Lopez hit a RBI-single and Gantt slugged a two-run blast, her third home run of the season, to account for the five-run second inning. Ostrander, Peterson and Lopez added RBI-singles in the third to push the lead to 13-0. Hancock erupted for eight more in the fourth, including Lopez's fourth's RBI-single of the game and a three-run double by Gantt.

Lopez and Gantt each finished with 5 RBI in the second game. Lopez went 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Gantt went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Peterson went 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, while Hoobery added two hits and drove in three more runs. Sophomore shortstop Larrissa Ostrander went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and two stolen bases. The Bulldogs racked up 17 hits in the win.

Peterson threw a complete-game shutout in the second game. The sophomore allowed one hit over five innings and struck out three.

Overall on the day, Lopez went 5-for-6 with 6 RBI and four runs in two games. Hoobery, a freshman, went 4-for-7 with 5 RBI, and Peterson finished 4-for-4 with 6 RBI and four runs scored. Dasis scored six times.

The Bulldogs will head to Ventura on Thursday for a 2:30 p.m. game. Hancock has a 1.5-game lead over the Pirates, who are 10-3 in conference action and 19-9 overall. Hancock swept a doubleheader 4-1 and 14-13 with the Pirates last month.
