Hancock Softball Enters Tie for First After Bakke's Walk-Off Hit and Killough's Gem in 1-0 Win Over No. 9 Bakersfield

Freshman Zaiden Bakke delivered a walk-off single to lead the Allan Hancock College softball team to a key 1-0 conference win over first-place Bakersfield on Monday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 in Western State Conference play and 13-6-1 overall. Hancock snapped Bakersfield's eight-game winning streak and forced a tie atop the conference standings. The Renegades, ranked No. 9 in the Southern California poll, fell to 4-1 in league and 19-5 overall after dropping the game rescheduled due to last week's rain.

Hancock sophomore Bailey Killough and Bakersfield's Kylee Fahy were locked in a pitchers' duel as the two aces matched one another with zeroes on the scoreboard.

Hancock's Mallory Townsend and Killough opened the game-winning rally with back-to-back one-out singles. Both runners took off and stole a base with Nikole Cody at the plate. The Renegades walked Cody to load the bases with one down, looking to create a force-out situation at the plate. However, Bakke had other plans and responded with the walk-off hit to score Townsend and prompt a celebration for the Bulldogs. The freshman recorded her second game-winning hit in conference action, the other came in a 3-2 win at Santa Barbara City College.

The Renegades stranded two runners on base in both the third and sixth innings against Killough. Fahy allowed only two baserunners through six innings.

Killough earned the win by scattering six hits over seven brilliant innings. She walked one, hit a batter and struck out three. Fahy allowed four hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings, issuing two walks and striking out 13 Bulldogs.

Bakersfield outhit Hancock 6-to-4. Ashley Hernandez and Aryka Chavez had two hits apiece for the Renegades. Four Bulldogs had one hit each, none bigger than the one off the bat of Bakke.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to play at Moorpark on Wednesday, March 21 in a conference game and host Oxnard at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 22.
