Bulldogs Defeat Cuesta 3-2 to End Slide

It has been a rocky, or should we say "rainy" start to the Bulldogs softball season thus far. With 5 games either cancelled or postponed due to weather conditions and dropping their last 6 games, the Bulldogs have been unable to get any momentum going this season.

But a solid conference win against cross-town rival Cuesta College might be all the Bulldogs needed to get going.

Cuesta was having a rough patch of their own, coming into the contest with a 4-15 record and a 9-game slide.  The Cougars were hoping to pull one out in Santa Maria and for the first two innings it seemed very possible.

The Cougars scored runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to gain the early advantage over the Bulldogs 2-0.

The Bulldogs quickly responded in the bottom of the third inning. With three singles and two stolen bases by sophomore outfielder Crystal Gonzalez, freshman outfielder Sianna Castillo, and sophomore outfielder Sabrina Ornales, the plate was set perfectly for sophomore first baseman Zaiden Bakke, who grounded out advancing Ornales to third base and scoring Gonzalez.

With two outs, freshman center Ehsya Glidewell stepped to the plate and smacked a single of her own, bringing in Ornales.

A triple by sophomore outfielder MacKenzie Caspian in the beginning of the batting order put the Bulldogs in early scoring position. Freshman infielder Jayden Andrade grounded out, bringing Caspian in for the score.

That would be all the scoring the Bulldogs would need, leaning on an excellent pitching performance by sophomore Shaylyn Coy, who kept Cuesta at bay, pitching the whole game and racking up seven strike outs.

The Bulldogs host another conference game tomorrow afternoon, when they welcome Moorpark to Santa Maria. First pitch is at 2:30pm.
