Sophomores Power Bulldogs to 13-1 Win at Oxnard to Close 2019 Season

Playing in their final collegiate game, Allan Hancock College sophomores Crystal Gonzalez, Sabrina Ornelas, Mackenzie Caspian, and Zaiden Bakke compiled eight hits, six RBI, and nine runs combined to lead the Bulldogs to a 13-1 win at Oxnard on Thursday. The Bulldogs and Condors finished the season for fourth in the Western State Conference's North Division at 7-9. Hancock went 12-21 overall this season, while Oxnard finished 14-20-1.

Giselle Rodan clubbed a solo home run, her tenth of the season, off Shaylyn Coy to give Oxnard a 1-0 lead after one.

Hancock scored six times with two outs in the second inning to take control of the game. Gonzalez started the scoring with a two-run single. Ornelas drove in another by reaching on an error. Bakke followed with a two-run double to left, and Coy capped the outburst with a double to center to drive in Bakke.

In the fourth, Gonzalez walked and Ornelas singled. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. After Coy walked, Adiana Pacheco hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 7-1. Coy raced home later on a wild pitch to give Hancock an 8-1 advantage.

It remained 8-1 until the seventh when Hancock again rallied with two outs. With nobody on, Gonzalez tripled to the gap in right. Ornelas singled her in for a RBI. After Bakke and Coy walked, Ornelas scored on a wild pitch to make it 10-1 Bulldogs. Pacheco stepped up and legged out a triple on a ball to center to drive in Coy and Bakke. Natalya Fuggs added a run-scoring double to cap the five-run inning. Hancock scored 12 runs with two outs on the day.

Hancock out-hit the Condors 12 to three. Gonzales went 2-for-2 with three walks, three runs, a triple, and 2 RBI. Ornelas went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and scored three times. Bakke scored twice, drove in two, and went 2-for-4 with a double. Fuggs and Mackenzie Caspian both went 2-for-4. Caspian drove in a career-best three runs.

Coy earned the win with a complete game. The Templeton native scattered three hits, three walks, and one run. She struck out five.

After 33 games, Gonzalez led the Bulldogs in nearly every offensive category with a .406 batitng average, 29 runs, 41 hits, 13 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 29 RBI, and 21 walks. Her Bulldog career ended with a lifetime .393 batting average and 64 RBI. Bakke hit .374 this season with 23 RBI to end with a career .400 batting average. Ornelas finished the season with a .329 batting average and a team-best 20 stolen bases.
