
Roland Leads Hancock to 61-35 Rout at Cuesta Tournament
Justine Roland helped the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team jump ahead early and the Bulldogs cruised to a 61-35 win over Victor Valley in the first round of a tournament hosted by Cuesta College on Thursday afternoon.
The Bulldogs built an early 21-7 lead on Victory Valley and they never looked back. Hancock led 36-13 at intermission and cruised from there.
Roland, a Righetti High School graduate, scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half. The sophomore was one of three Bulldogs to reach double-digits in points.
Sophomore Emma Weinreich scored 14 points and freshman Ali Rodriguez poured in 13. Sophomore center Veronica Sua just missed a double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds. The St. Joseph High School graduate pulled down seven offensive rebounds.
Hancock finished with 36 rebounds, 17 of which came on the offensive-side of the glass.
Hancock improved to 5-1 on the season under first-year head coach Cary Nerelli. Six games into the 2013-14 season, the Bulldogs have already exceeded their win total from all of last year. Victor Valley fell to 1-5.
Hancock advances into the winner's bracket where the Bulldogs battle Orange Coast (5-1), which edged L.A. Pierce in the first round 67-66. The semifinal game is at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Cuesta College.
