Hancock Women Drop San Diego Mesa Tournament Opener, 61-53

Despite a season-high 13 points from Tashara Pruett and 12 from Celina Calderon, the Allan Hancock women's basketball team dropped a 61-53 game to Rio Hondo to open the San Diego Mesa Tournament on Thursday. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 and face Imperial Valley in the consolation semifinal on Friday at 2 p.m. Imperial Valley lost to L.A. Harbor 79-73 in its first round game.

The Bulldogs and Roadrunners were tied 23-23 at halftime, but Hancock was outscored 38-30 in the final 20 minutes.

Pruett hit five of her six shots on the floor, and half of her six free throw attempts. The freshman added four rebounds and three steals. Calderon, Pruett and Nicole De La Guerra had three steals apiece. Hancock recorded 11 thefts as a team.

Ali Rodriguez finished with seven points, six rebounds and eight assists before she fouled out of the game. Freshman guard Marissa Torres, a Templeton High School graduate, finished with nine points.

The Bulldogs made 21 of their 39 shots for a 53.8 percent clip, but went 1 for 9 from three-point territory and made 10 of 17 from the free throw stripe.
