Bulldogs Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to Las Positas 73-69 at Cuesta Tournament

(San Luis Obispo, CA) Despite a combined 54 points from Celina Calderon, Ali Rodriguez and Marissa Torres, the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team dropped a 73-69 decision in overtime to Las Positas to open the Cuesta Invitational on Thursday night.

The Bulldogs dropped to 2-5, while Las Positas improved to 6-3 after its third straight win.  Hancock plays the loser of the Monterey/L.A. Pierce first round game on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the consolation bracket. 

The Bulldogs stormed out to a 37-24 lead at halftime behind 12 points from Calderon and 10 points from Torres. However, Las Positas regained the lead in the second half and led by one point 68-67 when Hancock freshman Michaila Miller was fouled and sent to the free throw line for two shots with 1.8 seconds to play. The Santa Barbara High School graduate hit one of the two shots from the charity stripe to send the game to overtime. She finished with four points and six rebounds.

The Bulldogs ran out of steam in overtime and were outscored 5-1 in the extra period to suffer their second straight defeat.

Calderon, a sophomore and Lompoc High School graduate, led the Bulldogs with 19 points. The guard made eight of her 10 shots from the floor, including two three-point buckets. She added four rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Rodriguez, a Pioneer Valley High School graduate, finished with 18 points on six for 18 shooting from the floor. She added two rebounds and five assists.   

Torres, a freshman guard, scored a career-high 17 points on six for 10 shooting from the field with two three-point buckets. The Templeton High School graduate made all three of her free throws to go with three rebounds.

Sophomore Nicole De La Guerra added eight points, nine rebounds and three steals. Lompoc High School graduate Tashara Pruett contributed three points and eight boards.

Mikayla Hasal led Las Positas with 22 points, including 15 in the second half. She made 10 of her 11 free throws in the second half. Timnesha Wilson added 15 points.

Hancock shot 50 percent from the floor on 26 for 52 shooting overall and 13 of its 22 free throws for a 59 percent mark.
