Hancock Falls 58-49 to Open Lady Bulldog Classic

A decisive 15-1 run by the Santa Maria All-Stars resulted in a 58-49 loss for the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team during the opening round of the 16th annual Lady Bulldog Classic on Thursday in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium.  The game was tied 43-43 when Isabel Maldonado buried a three-pointer with 5:32 to play to give the All-Stars the lead for good.

Celina Calderon led the Bulldogs with a game-high 20 points on eight for 13 shooting. The Lompoc High School graduate made two of her three shots from three-point range.  Ali Rodriguez added 10 points and five assists. Tashara Pruett added seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Michaila Miller added eight points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Hancock trailed 29-28 at halftime, but opened the second half on an 11-2 run capped by two jumpers from Miller to give Hancock a 39-31 lead with 16:30 to play.

Jennifer Lopez hit back-to-back jumpers for the All-Stars to tie the game before Isabel Maldonado buried a three-pointer with 5:32 to play to give the All-Stars the lead for good. The squad was comprised of former Central Coast high school stars, many played at four-year universities.

Hannah Miller, a Pioneer Valley High School graduate who played a San Diego Christian, led the All-Stars with 16 points and three steals. Ane McPike, a St. Joseph High School graduate and former Cal Poly tennis star, added 10 points and seven rebounds. Analise Riezebos, a former St. Joseph and Chico State player, added five points and 11 rebounds, while her sister Devin Riezebos, a former Cal State LA player, added eight points.

The All-Stars took advantage of 20 Hancock turnovers and turned them into 28 points. Hancock scored 16 points of the All-Stars' 16 turnovers.

The Bulldogs shot 38 percent (20-53) from the field and made just five of their 13 free throws (38 percent). The All-Stars shot 44 percent (21-48) from the floor and made 57 percent of their 21 free throws. Hancock pulled down 33 rebounds compared to 28 by the All-Stars.

The Bulldogs will face Saddleback in the consolation round on Friday at 3 p.m. Saddleback lost 57-30 to Foothill in the first round.
