Bulldogs Rout LA Pierce 70-42 Behind Rodriguez and Career Night From Torres
Behind 21 points from Ali Rodriguez and a career-high 19 from Marissa Torres, the Allan Hancock College women's basketball team dominated LA Pierce 70-42 on Saturday in Joe White Memorial Gymnasium. The Bulldogs improved to 3-9 in Western State Conference play and 11-15 overall. The Brahmas dropped to 1-10 in league and 4-21 for the season after dropping their second straight to the Bulldogs.
Rodriguez buried a three-pointer to close the first half and give Hancock a 35-17 lead into intermission. Torres led the Bulldogs in the opening 20 minutes with 15 points. The freshman hit three of six from three-point range and four of seven from the field overall. The Templeton High School graduate also hit four of her six free throws. She added another three and a free throw in the second half to surpass her previous career-high of 17 points.Torres pulled down six rebounds, including three on the offensive end.
Rodriguez made three of seven from beyond-the-arc and six of 15 overall. The sophomore made six of her seven free throws. She added three rebounds and five assists.
Celina Calderon added 10 points by sinking all four of her free throws and three of eight from the field. The sophomore finished with five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Tashara Pruett added eight points and seven rebounds. Nicole De La Guerra led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds to go with two steals and six points.
Hancock shot 44 percent from the field (23 for 52) and 41 percent from three-point range (7 for 17). The Bulldogs made 17 of their 25 free throws for a 68 percent mark. They outrebounded the Brahmas 35 to 32 and had more assists (14 to four). The Hancock defense forced 17 Pierce turnovers that led to 16 Hancock points.
Vanessa DeSimone and Ream Darwich led Pierce with eight points apiece.
Hancock closes the regular season with two conference games. The fifth place Bulldogs play at Santa Barbara on Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. SBCC sits in fourth place at 4-6 in conference and 9-16 overall. Hancock ends the season on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. against Oxnard (2-8, 2-18).
